To herald the start of a new year. Around 4,000 years in ancient Babylon. At the beginning of the earliest recorded festivities, honor of a new year’s arrival. For the Babylonians, during the first new moon following the vernal equinox is said to be in late March, where light and dark meet.
The Babylonians marked the occasion with a monumental spiritual festival called Akitu (derived from the Sumerian word for barley, cut in the spring). During this time, 11 days would pass each day held a different ritual.
In addition to the new year, Atiku honored the mythological victory of the Babylonian sky god Marduk. Over the evil sea goddess Tiamat. Serving as a reminder, a new king would take the throne during this time.
